Winks could pull Tottenham U-turn after update via Sky - pundit

Harry Winks could pursue a summer exit if he cannot “stamp his authority” at Tottenham, according to Alan Hutton.

The former Spurs defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 25-year-old faces a “massive few months” at the north London club.

England international Winks has started just three Premier League games under Antonio Conte despite receiving the former Chelsea manager’s public backing.

As quoted by Sky Sports last Friday (31 December), the Italian confirmed Winks “will stay” at Tottenham past the winter transfer window.

Conte insisted the midfielder is a “reliable” option.

Hutton insisted it is “up to Winks” to secure his Tottenham future after enduring a tough spell in recent years.

“I think he’s toughed it out for a while,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“He’s been given certain games to come in and play, and that shows the manager’s commitment and trust in him.

“Now it’s up to Winks to back it up and perform in these games. If I was him, I’d be giving it until the end of the season to see where it takes me.

“If he can continue his good form and break into that Spurs midfield, then there’s an opportunity to stamp his authority on this team under Conte.

“But this is a massive few months for Winks in his Tottenham career. If he can’t get into that side, he’s got to move on.”

10-cap England ace Winks is out of contract at Tottenham in June 2024.

The midfielder has made 14 appearances this season, registering one assist in 786 minutes of football.
