Wolves are working on a deal to sign highly-rated non-league defender Jacob Mensah, Football Insider sources understand.

Mensah has been earning rave reviews for Isthmian League South East Division sie Ramsgate FC and the teenager's performances have brought him to the attention of clubs higher up the football pyramid.

Wolves, Crystal Palace and Cardiff have all sent scouts to watch the athletic defender in action this season and he has impressed the Premier League trio.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider the powerful centre-back is the 'new Chris Smalling', with the Manchester United and England ace playing non-league football with Maidstone United before moving to Fulham and then Old Trafford.

Mensah has already played over 65 games despite still only being 18 and he is tipped for a bright future in the professional game.

Several Football League clubs are also weighing up moves for Mensah who is on a non-contract basis at Ramsgate.

Mensah's suitors see the teenager as a potential star in the making and seems only a matter of time before he moves into the professional ranks.
