Rob Edwards is set to be sacked by Wolves imminently but will have his eye on an instant return to management with Burnley soon.

Edwards took over at Wolves last November after Vitor Pereira was dismissed with the club failing to win any of their first 10 games of the season.

The former Wolves defender had impressed in charge of Middlesbrough and was hired on a three-and-a-half year contract with a view to taking charge in the Championship.

He oversaw Wolves' relegation to the second tier last month, despite a slight upturn in form, and they had been expected to stick with him for next season.

Widespread reports have claimed that Edwards is set to be dismissed soon, but he will surely be confident of landing the Burnley job in the coming weeks.

The Clarets are searching for a new boss after parting ways with Scott Parker following their own relegation to the Championship.

Edwards' second-tier credentials speak for themselves and he will surely be a leading contender to enter the Turf Moor dugout next.

Rob Edwards to be a leading candidate for the Burnley job

Edwards' record of five wins in 32 games at Wolves is not great on first view, but they were clearly a better team under him and standing in decent stead ahead of a promotion charge next season.

He has already overseen the signings of Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez, as well as being key to getting Andre to sign a new contract.

Edwards' appointment looked, in part, like the Molineux side were preparing for Championship football, which makes his sacking all the more surprising.

He oversaw Luton's promotion from the second tier through the play-offs in 2023, and had Middlesbrough in second place when he was poached last November.

The 43-year-old has won 32 of his 78 Championship games in charge, with an impressive 1.53 points-per-game ratio so far in his career.

Burnley are in clear need of a manager with such credentials as they seek an immediate return to the Premier League next term.

They are yet to appoint a new boss since Parker left in late April, so clearly do not have any outstanding candidates whom they are keen to appoint.

Edwards would surely be happy to return to management with the Clarets imminently, especially as he looks to prove his worth to Wolves following their shock call.

Who are the favourites to be the next Burnley boss?

If Edwards is keen to take over at Turf Moor soon, then he will seemingly be competing with several big names for the role.

Steven Gerrard is the favourite to take the job with one of the leading UK bookmakers as it stands, at odds of 2/1.

Steven Gerrard has had 'four meetings' with Burnley to discuss manager's role

Sources have told Football Insider that Gerrard has held four meetings with Burnley chiefs to discuss potentially succeeding Parker.

Cardiff boss Brian Barry-Murphy is the second-favourite at 4/1 odds, while Russell Martin and Robbie Keane are also believed to be in contention at 5/1.
