Sources: Ex-Nottingham Forest manager 'discussed' at Wolves amid Cesar Peixoto doubts
Ex-Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper is being discussed internally at Wolves as a potential successor to Cesar Peixoto, sources have told Football Insider.
The 46-year-old Portugese replaced Rob Edwards in the summer but has struggled to get his team firing, winning just seven of their opening 13 games across all competitions.
The former Gil Vicente boss is already fighting for his future after failing to impress the club's hierarchy, sources have revealed to Football Insider.
Cooper has been out of work since May, after he was sacked from his role with Danish side Brondby after just seven months.
The 46-year-old led spent time in the Championship with Swansea and Nottingham Forest, leading the latter to the Premier League in 2022.
After clinching safety in their first season, Cooper left the City Ground after a poor start to the 2023-24 campaign and would later endure a dismal 12-game stint in charge of Leicester City in 2024.
Wolves discuss manager change
After making such a significant change out of nowhere by sacking Edwards in the summer, decision-makers at Wolves are in a bind.
The dismissal of Peixoto would represent an embarrassing turn of events, and it will not be one made hastily.
There have been positives about the former winger's early tenure, and victory away at Burnley on Friday has left his team just four points off the automatic promotion spots.
But Peixoto will now be asked to generate some momentum off the back of such a positive result, and upcoming matches against Portsmouth, Watford and Cardiff City will prove key to his future.
Should he fail to convince those above him of his ability, Cooper would almost certainly jump at the opportunity to return to English football.
Not only did the Welshman get Nottingham Forest promoted, he also led Swansea City to the play-offs on separate occasions and could well be the man needed to push for promotion.
Cesar Peixoto determined to continue
Despite the mounting pressure, Peixoto is keen to continue as Wolves manager and lead his team towards promotion.
Last week saw the Portuguese boss face serious questions when his side were dealt a huge blow when they lost 3-1 to Bolton at Molineux.
"We can lose, draw or win against any team because it’s a very competitive league. We know what we have to do and we know the team we have," Peixoto said after the game.
"We’ve spoken with the players and they know we can do a little better to win these games. All of us have to do better and I think we deserved to win, but today Bolton were more efficient than us.”
