Wood tipped to strike 'partnership with 'another brilliant' Newcastle signing after Sky medical update - pundit

Kevin Campbell has tipped Chris Wood to shine at Newcastle United.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker is confident the 30-year-old will be “a very clever signing” given he will be receiving service from Kieran Trippier.

According to Sky Sports (12 January), Wood will undergo a medical on Tyneside today after his £25million release clause was triggered.

The New Zealand international is set to finalise personal terms ahead of an expected announcement prior to the weekend’s game against Watford.

The Magpies have moved quickly to sign a centre-forward after Callum Wilson was ruled out for eight weeks through injury.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of Wood’s credentials, Campbell said: “His goal record is very good and aerially he is brilliant.

“When you have the likes of Trippier whipping the ball in, it would appear to be another very clever signing. Wood is a striker who can go and attack it. He is as good as anyone at attacking the a ball in the box.

“I just think they need weapons who can keep them up. Wood is one of them. I think he’d be a very good signing for them.

“It’s a move that definitely weakens Burnley as well, which can only be a good thing for Newcastle.”

Wood has scored three goals in 21 appearances across all competitions this season.

He is set to become Newcastle’s second signing of January after Kieran Trippier’s arrival from Atletico Madrid.
