Darren Bent admits he was blown away by the performance of Everton midfielder Andre Gomes after his comeback against Arsenal.

The former Tottenham and England hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, admits he could hardly believe the 26-year-old was back on the pitch so soon after a serious ankle injury.

Gomes played just over 30 minutes in the Toffees’ 3-2 defeat to the Gunners, having been sidelined since the draw versus Spurs back in November.

Bent was seriously impressed with what he saw from the Portuguese international in the middle of the park, heralding the immediate impact he had on Carlo Ancelotti’s men.

Bent told Football Insider: “I was so happy to see Gomes, he was so good. In the second half you could see where they miss him.

“He’s so comfortable in possession, and his range of passing, left and right foot, he impressed me. I thought: ‘Wow, that’s what they’ve been missing.’

“It’s testament to himself to get himself back so quickly. That was a nasty one, I thought he could have been out for ages. He played well.”

Gomes played nine times for Everton this season prior to his injury blow, with his runout on Sunday the first time he has managed to feature for new boss Ancelotti.

He initially joined the Toffees on loan from Barcelona in the summer of 2018, playing 29 times before turning his stay permanent in 2019.

In other Everton news, Alex Bruce says the Toffees would be getting a “no-nonsense” player in their reported Premier League transfer hunt.
