'Wow... This Kid' - Exclusive: Whelan amazed by Leeds player with 97% pass completion

Noel Whelan has heaped praise on Kalvin Phillips after Leeds United thrashed West Brom 5-0 on Tuesday night.

The former Whites and Coventry striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, hailed the 25-year-old a “pillar of strength wherever you put him on the pitch” after his performance at The Hawthorns.

Phillips returned to the midfield for the trip to the West Midlands having started in the middle of a back-three in the 1-0 win over Burnley on Sunday.

The England international was a dominant figure in last night’s win, registering 97 per cent pass accuracy and winning a season-best five duels (WyScout).

The win sees Marcelo Bielsa’s side climb to 11th in the Premier League while significantly bettering their goal difference.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Phillips’ form, Whelan said: “Brilliant.

“It is not just the way he plays the game, it is his intelligence. He reads the game better than most players.

“He is just a very intelligent, assured player who believes in his ability. Tackles, covering round, doubling up, reading the game, flick ons, passes – it is all there to be seen.

“It is not easy playing in a back three and midfield. It is a different skill set you need.

“But wow, the kid can play anywhere in my opinion. He does not look phased by anything. He is very professional. A pillar of strength wherever you put him on the pitch.”
