'You cannot blame Fornals' - Exclusive: McAvennie points finger at West Ham senior star

Frank McAvennie has hailed Pablo Fornals as a big talent but called on Aaron Cresswell to give him a helping hand on the West Ham left flank.

The Irons legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that the left-back should be giving the attacking midfielder clearer positioning instructions.

Fornals has started every game since the restart and established himself as a key figure at the London Stadium following his £25million move from Villarreal last summer.

The attacking midfielder’s 34 appearances this season have yielded three goals and five assists.

McAvennie believes a budding relationship is forming on the left-hand side.

“Fornals does very well out wide but he is not a defender,” he told Football Insider.

“He has got blamed for the goal at the weekend but Cresswell has got to talk to him. He is the defender and he has got to tell him. You cannot blame the boy.

“He should not be that far back as far as I am concerned. Sometimes he finds himself beyond Cresswell at left-back.

“Those two will form a good partnership down that side though but they need to talk to each other more. They have not done it in the past couple of games.

“Fornals is a very talented boy going forward and he keeps getting chances. He has that energy which you need in the Premier League these days.”
