Liverpool are targeting a summer move for Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs, Football Insider sources understand.
The north Londoners are ready to listen to offers for Gibbs this summer amid a growing likelihood that he will not be at the club next season.
The left-back has lost his first-choice status to Nacho Monreal over the last 18 months and Arsenal are ready to cash in on the 26-year-old while he can still command a high fee.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Liverpool are monitoring Gibbs’ situation and are weighing up a move as they assess options to strengthen at left-back and provide competition for Alberto Moreno.
Coincidentally, Liverpool and Arsenal are both keen on Leicester teenager Ben Chilwell, who has just a year remaining on his contract with the Foxes.
The Merseysiders are also keeping tabs on Celtic’s Kieran Tierney, Lorient’s Raphael Guerreiro, PSV Eindhoven’s Jetro Willems and Cologne’s Jonas Hector.
As revealed by Football Insider, Gibbs could be part of the biggest overhaul of the Arsenal first-team squad for a number of years as they prepare to add Jamie Vardy to the £34million signing of Granit Xhaka.
The Academy graduate, who joined the Gunners at the age of 15 from Wimbledon, is contracted to Arsenal until 2018 but has not opened talks with the club about a new deal.
Given his pedigree and age, the Gunners rate the England international, who has won 10 senior caps, in the £12million bracket.
Newcastle made an enquiry about a loan move for Gibbs in the January transfer window but manager Arsene Wenger was not interested in allowing a key squad man to leave midway through the season.
Gibbs made 30 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal in the recently completed domestic campaign, but made only 12 starts and just three of those were in the Premier League.
In other Liverpool transfer news, the new wife of Jamie Vardy has responded to Twitter trolls about interest from the Merseysiders.
