Liverpool are keeping tabs on RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner as he continues to set the Bundesliga alight, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claims the 21-year-old forward is the latest Leipzig ace to be added to Jurgen Klopp’s shortlist, with Naby Keita and Emil Forsberg also thought of highly on Merseyside.
It is believed that Klopp’s scouts have been watching the Bundesliga’s surprise package for almost a year now, as they defy the odds to sit in second place following last season’s promotion to the Bundesliga.
Werner has been in mind-blowing form of late for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side, scoring 11 goals in his last 14 outings against the likes of Schalke, Borussia Monchengladbach and Mainz.
Able to play as both a centre-forward or out wide, Werner would add depth in the final third for Klopp’s side and could be a player he knows well from his time as Borussia Dortmund boss.
Werner is a new signing after joining Leipzig for around £8million in the summer, and is known for his explosive pace and unrelenting work ethic in the final third.
However, it remains to be seen if Klopp can tempt Hasenhuttl to sell his in-form hotshot ahead of the 2017-18 campaign, with more than three years still remaining on Werner’s contract.
Football Insider verdict:
Still very young, Werner would be a fantastic bit of business by the Reds as they look to add depth to the likes of Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane. England international Daniel Sturridge has failed to provide such cover, with injuries preventing him from having a larger role. Seven-time Germany Under-21 international Werner would add to Klopp’s attacking options but they continue to be linked to fast, attacking players like this and they can’t buy them all. It’s certainly going to be an interesting summer for Liverpool fans though as Klopp gets a warchest and goes about creating the team that he thinks can finally win the Premier League for the Reds.
