Ghanian international Christian Atsu has revealed that he has heard nothing from Newcastle, with time reportedly running out on an offer.
The 25-year-old returned to his parent club and Premier League leaders Chelsea having helped Newcastle secure a place in England’s top flight.
The winger played his part in returning Newcastle to the top flight, making a total of 35 appearances in all competitions and scoring five goals.
However, the Magpies didn’t appear to miss his presence when he travelled with the Ghanian national team to play in the African Cup of Nations as they won four out of their seven matches in all competitions.
Speaking with the Evening Chronicle, Atsu admitted that he hasn’t received any news from the club about his future, but he’s delighted with what he achieved at St James’ Park.
“[There have been] no conversations. I have not heard from Newcastle,” he said.
“What I will say, though, is that I owe them thanks. They have given me an opportunity – it is a big club.
“Whatever happens in the future I thank the fans, Rafa and everyone at the club.
“I cannot say what will happen with me. I cannot predict football.”
According to ESPN, Newcastle still have the option to sign the Ghanian international on a permanent deal but they’ll need to make a decision on his future by the end of the week.
It’s been a very successful season for Atsu regarding minutes on the pitch – he’s played more matches at club level for Newcastle than he ever had in the past during his former loan spells.
As a forward, Atsu will find it very difficult to break into the first team at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea have enjoyed great success this season with the likes of Pedro, Hazard and Willian all playing a massive role.
In other Newcastle transfer news, this £17million speed machine is on the Toon’s radar after Atsu’s recommendation.
