Playmaker tells club he wants to quit & sign for Rangers in multi-million deal - Ibrox Sources

Daniel Johnson wants to quit Preston North End to join Rangers before the transfer cut-off next month, Football Insider understands.

The playmaker, 27, has had his head turned by interest from the Glasgow giants as they look to continue their summer squad strengthening.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Johnson has told Preston boss Alex Neil he is eager to join Rangers after talks opened on a multi-million pound deal.

The Championship club are vulnerable to losing the central midfielder as he has entered the final nine months of a contract that expires next June.

Discussions over an extension to his deal have yet to result in an agreement, which has opened the door for Rangers to strike.

Preston want £5m for the proven performer, who joined from Aston Villa in the summer of 2015.

Rangers have turned their attention to Johnson as they look to bring goals and creativity to their midfield.

The Jamaican attacking midfielder is in demand after an impressive 2019-20 campaign in which he scored 12 goals and provided eights assists from 33 Championship matches.

Breaking from midfield he has been a consistent scorer and creator for Preston across 219 matches for the club.

In addition to an eyecatching haul of 43 goals, he has also weighed in with 26 assists.


Johnson is not the only Preston star attracting attention from north of the border.
