Darren Bent claims that Celtic would be getting a “great signing” in the shape of Danny Simpson and that the defender would love to join a massive club like the Hoops.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aston Villa and England striker says that the former Leicester full-back will produce solid performances week in, week out and that the Bhoys would be savvy to secure his capture.
As revealed exclusively by Football Insider, the Hoops are set to table a contract offer for the English defender as Neil Lennon pushes for his capture.
Bent says that Simpson will be excited about the prospect of playing European football again as well as taking part in the infamous Old Firm game with Rangers and that any preconceptions about Scottish football should be dismissed.
“He’s been around the block so he knows the game, he’s a great signing for them because they know what they’re going to get from him,” Bent told Football Insider.
“Every game you’re going to get seven out of ten, solid performer, consistent, knows his job. It’s a very astute signing.
“To play in that Old Firm derby, if they can get through the Champions League qualifiers that’s another big opportunity for them – I think that’s probably why he’s open to going there.
“Playing for Celtic, it’s a massive football club. People say they’re only in Scotland, it doesn’t matter – they’re one of the big hitters in world football.”
Simpson has over 200 Premier League games under his belt for the likes of Manchester United, Newcastle United and Leicester, but only managed to feature six times in the top flight last season for the Foxes.
Celtic saw former first-choice right-back Mikael Lustig depart at the end of his contract this summer, leaving manager Lennon with a void to fill.
In other Celtic news, it can be REVEALED that a player highly rated by Lennon is heading out of the club after completing a medical and agreeing a long-term contract with elite team.
