Celtic right-back Cristian Gamboa has spoken of his delight at being at the World Cup with Costa Rica this summer, as it finally means he will get some playing time.
The 28-year-old has endured a miserable season for the Bhoys, making only three appearances, the last of which was in February against St Johnstone.
He has admitted that he will examine his future in the summer when he returns from the World Cup in Russia.
“It’s a relief to be able to play after a very difficult season” he said, as quoted by the Evening Times.
“For me, I’ve done everything I possibly can to get to Russia.
“I always tried to give my best at Celtic, but they have made their decision and the manager decided he didn’t want to use me at all this season.
“I need to look at the situation after the World Cup.”
The player has fallen behind both Mikael Lustig and Anthony Ralston in the pecking order for the Hoops after rarely featuring this season.
Football Insider verdict
It is no wonder that Gamboa plans to ‘look at the situation’ after the World Cup as his club career his completely ground to a halt in the last season. Brendan Rodgers seems to have no faith in the player at all, and it would be best for his career if he moved on, even on loan, in the summer. Gamboa’s cause for the Hoops wan’t helped when in his biggest game for the club so far, a Champions League group stage clash against Bayern Munich, he turned in a very poor performance, and only played once more in the season. Rodgers obviously doesn’t seem to think that he had the ability to play on a regular basis for the Bhoys. He will be in the ‘shop window’ during the World Cup at least, and if he has a good tournament there is a more than decent chance that he will be able to get the move that he needs to get his club career back up and running once more.
