Former Celtic striker John Hartson believes that on-loan striker Odsonne Edouard will be one of the first signings confirmed by the Hoops this summer.

The Scottish Sun are reporting that the Bhoys will have to pay £10million by the 31st of May to complete the permanent signing of the 20-year-old from PSG.

Despite the amount of money involved, Hartson expects that the deal will get done and that it will send out a message that the Hoops mean business next season.

“Edouard Odsonne is the first name that I would expect to be confirmed with the club clearly wanting to bring the young Frenchman on a permanent deal” he said, writing in his column in the Evening Times.

“That in itself would be a strong message to the support because he is not going to come cheap.

“Getting the striker on a permanent deal from PSG would be a real signal that Celtic are out to do business, in the same way that getting Tom Rogic tied up on a five-year deal was.”

If the Hoops pay the money that has been quoted for Edouard, it would smash the club’s previous record signing of £6million, which was the sum paid for Chris Sutton in 2000 and Hartson a year later.

Football Insider verdict:

The signing of Edouard would certainly signal a change in the way the Hoops make signings, as they have haven’t come close to breaking their transfer record in recent years. It seems doubtful that they would pay the eight figure sum that has been quoted in reports for Edouard, but even spending between £7-8million would be a statement of intent. Brendan Rodgers must see the player as pivotal to the Hoops’ hopes of making progress in the Champions League, why is why the Bhoys are willing to spend like they haven’t in many years. Of course, fans will hope that this doesn’t mean that other areas of the side are neglected, and there do have to be some reinforcements made, particularly in defence, but if the Edouard is completed like Hartson believes will happen, it will signal exciting times going forward for the Hoops and their supporters.
