'Abandon ship', 'Clear out begins' - Celtic fans react as player quits Rangers

Celtic fans on social media have been reacting with hilarity to the news that centre-back David Bates has agreed to leave Rangers to join Hamburg on a free transfer at the end of the season.

The supporters seemed to take joy from the fact that the Ibrox side won’t make any money as the 21-year-old is out of contract in the summer.

One supporter claimed that it showed that the Gers were beginning the start of a firesale of players as he declared that ‘the clear out begins’.

Here are some of the best reactions from Twitter to the news of Bates’ departure from Ibrox:

Bates had done reasonably well for the Gers this season, and played well in the goalless draw at Parkhead in December, but he has not featured after suffering an injury in the Hoops’ 3-2 win at Ibrox last month, when he got injured trying to block Tom Rogic’s equalising goal.

It would seem unlikely that he will feature in the upcoming Scottish Cup semi-final due to his injury, and it would be a bit of a surprise if he played for the Light Blues again before moving to Germany.

Hamburg are currently in the relegation zone in the Bundesliga, and despite being one of Germany’s biggest clubs they are very likely to be relegated.
