Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce celebrated with Jonjo Shelvey

Noel Whelan claims Newcastle United have done “the best business” among all the Premier League sides over the summer transfer window.

The former Leeds United and Coventry City striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, has been left raving over the captures of Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser and Jamal Lewis.

The Magpies confirmed the signings of the trio this week to add to the arrivals of Mark Gillespie and Jeff Hendrick earlier this summer.

Despite Chelsea signing the likes of Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech and Everton securing the services James Rodriguez, Abdoluaye Doucoure and Allan, Whelan has boldly claimed that Bruce has done the best business this summer.

Whelan told Football Insider: “I think he’s done great business – I said this two weeks ago, if he managed to get these deals done and those players through the door, what an absolute coup that would be.

“Wilson, proven goalscorer in the Premier League, someone that Newcastle need and we know they needed that because of the injuries to Dwight Gayle and Joelinton’s form.

“They needed that competition and they’ve got a player there that knows the Premier League and knows how to hit the back of the net.

“The other two acquisitions in Jamal Lewis and Ryan Fraser, well, your wing-back roles are sorted straight away there, two players who are exceptional in those positions and will cause problems – honest and hard-working players.

“They’ve added three quality players alongside Jeff Hendrick to that midfield. They’ve probably done the best business, so far, in the window.”
