'Absolute shambles' - Tottenham fans react as 28-year-old left out of PFA TOTY
By Will Butcher
Tottenham fans have blasted the Players’ Football Association on Twitter after they left out defender Toby Alderweireld from their team of the year.
The 28-year-old has been a crucial member of Mauricio Pochettino’s defence this season alongside the likes of Hugo Lloris and Jan Vertonghen, but was not named by the PFA.
Instead, the PFA selected Chelsea duo David Luiz and Gary Cahill at centre-back after announcing the side on their official Twitter account on Thursday morning.

Conceding only 22 goals this season in the Premier League, Spurs have the best defence of England’s top flight with Alderweireld being a prominent figure in Pochettino’s back line.
Despite being named in last season’s side alongside the likes of Hector Bellerin, Wes Morgan and Danny Rose, Alderweireld has failed to join Spurs quartet Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Kyle Walker and Rose this time round.

Tottenham fans took to Twitter to criticise the PFA’s decision to leave Belgium international Alderweireld out of the side, despite his commanding exploits in Spurs’ defence this term.
Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:
So Spurs have the best defence in the league yet Lloris, Alderweireld and Vertonghen can't get in TOTY. Absolute shambles

Alderweireld is far better than Cahill and has had a better season. Guess they didn't want too many Spurs players though. Keane > Cahill too

Keeping 16 clean sheets in his 32 league and cup appearances, the former Atletico Madrid and Southampton defender is likely to feel aggrieved that he has been omitted from the side.
Alderweireld is likely to start at the back for Chelsea on Saturday evening, as Spurs go up against Antonio Conte’s side in the semi-final of the FA Cup at Wembley.
In other Tottenham news, fans have also reacted on Twitter after having the same number of players in the side as Chelsea.
