Charlie Nicholas has claimed that Steven Gerrard’s appointment as Rangers boss is ‘iconic’ and is even bigger than when Paul Gascoigne joined the Ibrox side in 1995.
Former Celtic striker Nicholas was absolutely drooling over the Liverpool legend’s arrival at Ibrox whilst appearing on Gillette Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports Football on Saturday afternoon, also claiming that the move for Gerrard had him ‘a bit concerned’ as a Celtic fan.
“They’ve got me a bit concerned. It’s an iconic signing. People have been telling me it’s as big as Gazza, it’s bigger than that,” he said.
Nicholas also claimed that the Ibrox side will get more money into eventually challenge Celtic.
“I don’t think they’ll threaten Celtic immediately but I certainly think there’ll be more investment in a couple of years, it’s an absolutely amazing signing.”
Gerrard will have his work cut out for him in trying to stop a Hoops side which has just won it’s seventh title in a row, but as far as Nicholas is concerned the appointment is a masterstroke.
Football Insider verdict
Nicholas’ comments are pretty incredible, he must be the only Celtic fan who was expressed any worry about facing Gerrard as Rangers manager. Of course, only time will tell if Gerrard becomes a good manager, and the appointment may turn to be one of the best decisions that the Ibrox side have ever made, but it is a gamble, to bring in a man with no experience to manage one of the biggest clubs in British football, It seems like Dave King and the Ibrox board are hoping that the appointment is more of a Graeme Souness than a John Barnes, but anything can happen, it will be important that Gerrard is backed in the transfer window though, as he will need to bring in some big personalities to deal with a Celtic side which is full of them. The battle for Glasgow is just beginning, but Nicholas seems to be cowering in the corner.
