'Absolutely horrible' - Exclusive: Hutton left devastated by Leeds news

Alan Hutton admits he is gutted to hear Leeds United defender Gaetano Berardi had been ruled out of action with torn knee ligaments.

The former Aston Villa and Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, has revealed he fears the Swiss international could find himself isolated if he stays at Elland Road this summer.

Leeds confirmed on Monday that Berardi had suffered a cruciate ligament tear in the win over Derby and that he now faces up to nine months on the sidelines.

The 31-year-old is set to be out of contract at the end of the season, leaving his future up in the air at Leeds.

Hutton insists that it is a devastating setback for the defender and has lifted the lid on how felt left out when he suffered a serious injury.

Hutton told Football Insider: “It’s absolutely horrible, no one wants to see anyone get injured, especially an ACL, that’s kind of your main football injury if you like.

“It’s difficult, you’re on the sidelines from early on, you see how they’re doing, they’re going all the way and they’re celebrating and stuff and you don’t really feel part of it.

“I remember back in 2005, I broke my leg, we ended up winning the league that year and I was out from September. I remember seeing the boys really come together and that winning mentality and you feel a little bit on the outside.

“It always happens in football and it’s how you react and come back from this.”

Berardi started Sunday’s 3-1 win over Derby but was forced off after 33 minutes and was replaced by Luke Ayling.

The versatile centre-back has a total of 25 appearances under his belt for Leeds this season.
