Agbonlahor: Aston Villa have delivered statement of intent with Bailey signing

Leon Bailey is a “great signing” for Aston Villa, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer claimed he has “heard a lot about” Bailey.

Football Insider revealed on 30 July Aston Villa had agreed personal terms with Bailey and were wrapping up a deal with Bayer Leverkusen.

The club confirmed a day later they had agreed a deal with the Bundesliga outfit, subject to a medical.

He was then formally announced as a Villa player earlier this week (4 August).

The Midlands giants quickly followed up the signing of Bailey with the addition of Southampton striker Danny Ings.

They have already added Emiliano Buendia for a club-record £33million fee from Norwich City.

“It’s a good bit of business and good that they’ve got that over the line,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“I’ve heard a lot about him, seen him play and score goals. He’s very quick.

“In the Premier League, you cannot stand still. You’ve got to keep moving forward, you need to improve your squad.

“Aston Villa have got good wingers in Traore and El Ghazi but you’ve got to keep improving and have competition for places. That’s what helps your squad.

“It’s a great signing and it just shows Aston Villa’s intent. They don’t want to stand still, they want to push forward.”

Bailey has scored 39 goals and provided 26 assists in 156 games across all competitions for Leverkusen.

The 23-year-old has nine Jamaica caps to his name and was part of their squad at this summer’s Gold Cup.
