Gabby Agbonlahor has backed Illan Meslier to be the number one goalkeeper at Leeds United for a “long time”.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England striker delivered his verdict after it was revealed the Whites have no intentions of selling the 21-year-old.
This site revealed from a Leeds source that the Yorkshire giants will not listen to offers for Meslier amid interest from top European clubs.
The National report last season’s Champions League finalists Paris Saint-Germain are interested in Meslier as a more realistic alternative to Hugo Lloris.
Leeds’ Premier League rivals West Ham were also monitoring the youngster as a potential replacement for Lukasz Fabianski before he agreed a new contract.
This all comes after his agent Xavier Fleury told the LUFC fanzone podcast there were “big clubs” circling his client.
Asked for his assessment of Meslier’s future, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I like him.
“I think he’s one, as a young goalkeeper, he’s going to get better and better.
“He’s one they should tie down because he’s got a lot of talent.
“I’m sure Leeds don’t want to be losing their top talent. I’m sure they’ll want to keep hold of him and keep moving forward.
“I think they’ll tie him down and he’ll be the number one at Leeds for a long time.”
Meslier has started 29 of Leeds’ 30 Premier League games this season and has kept an impressive nine clean sheets.
Eight of those came before his 21st birthday, beating Joe Hart’s division record for shutouts before turning 21.
