Agbonlahor names two surprise Tottenham stars who will thrive under Fonseca
Matt Doherty and Sergio Reguilon could be the unexpected beneficiaries of the Paulo Fonseca reign at Tottenham, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England forward claimed Spurs “need” to play with wingbacks because of the pair’s defensive issues.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano tweeted today (June 16) Fonseca is set to sign a contract with Tottenham who are planning his announcement.
He told talkSPORT last week (June 10) Fonseca’s favoured 3-4-2-1 system would “benefit” some of the Spurs squad.
The London club signed full-back pair Reguilon and Doherty last summer but both enjoyed mixed starts.
Doherty and Serge Aurier shared the right-back role but Football Insider learned on June 11 Aurier has agreed personal terms with Paris Saint-Germain.

Reguilon was a regular at left-back but missed a significant period of the season through injury.
Asked whether Spurs could thrive in a three-at-the-back system, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “Definitely.
“It will suit them more. Spurs need to play with wingbacks because they don’t have top quality full-backs Doherty and Reguilon.
“They’re not very good defensively, but going forward they’re very good.
“It would definitely suit those two but Spurs still need a lot of help in the centre-half department.”
Former manager Jose Mourinho failed to land on a preferred centre-back pairing before he was sacked by the club in April.
Tottenham currently have Eric Dier, Joe Rodon, Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez on their books as options for the new boss.
