Agbonlahor: O'Brien is 'pushing' to join Leeds and they will beat Crystal Palace to 'big' signing

Huddersfield star Lewis O’Brien wants to sign for Leeds United so he can stay in Yorkshire.

That’s according to former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Leeds’ pursuit of the 22-year-old midfielder.

On 13th August, Football Insider revealed O’Brien is telling his club he wants to quit and join Leeds.

The Terriers rejected a Leeds bid of no more than £3million for O’Brien as they value him at closer to £10m.

Football Insider first broke news on 12th August that Cyrstal Palace have also registered their interest in the youngster.

It is understood United had hoped to recruit a new central midfielder weeks ago in accordance with Marcelo Bielsa’s wishes.

Agbonlahor insists the highly rated midfielder will opt to sing for Leeds if he is given a choice.

“He’s pushing to join Leeds,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“Yorkshire lads don’t want to leave Yorkshire. I didn’t want to leave Birmingham to go to London.

“He will want to stay in the area. It’s a big move for him and it makes sense.

“Bielsa likes his versatile players, just look at Stuart Dallas.

“O’Brien is like that, he can play everywhere.”

O’Brien’s Huddersfield contract expires next summer though the Terriers have the option of triggering a one-year extension clause.

The midfielder is yet to feature in the Championship for his current side this season after testing positive for Covid last week.
