Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted Martin O'Neill would be a "great appointment" as the new Celtic director of football.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-forward, who played under O'Neill at Aston Villa, claimed nobody knows the club better than him and he could help stop Rangers from retaining the Scottish Premiership title.

Celtic have appointed Ange Postecoglou as their new manager but they have yet to fill the role above him who would be in overall charge of recruitment.

Former recruitment chief Nick Hammond left the club in March after the Hoops' disappointing title defence.

But Agbonlahor has insisted O'Neill would be "perfect" for the role.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I think it could be a good appointment.

“Martin O’Neill knows the club better than anyone. It would be a perfect appointment. He loves the club so he’s the sort of person who can get the right players in and the right system in place.

“He loves Celtic and he won’t want them to be losing the title to Rangers again.

“So, definitely, I think it would be a great appointment.”

O'Neill spent five years as manager of Celtic and won seven trophies during his spell.

He has been out of football since being sacked as Nottingham Forest manager at the end of June 2019.
