Agbonlahor suggests Southampton could sell Vestergaard to Tottenham after update

Gabby Agbonlahor has suggested Southampton may look to sell Tottenham target Jannik Vestergaard this summer with just one year left on his contract.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England forward claimed the defender is a “great player” who may thrive at Spurs.

The Daily Mail reported on 5 July Tottenham have held talks over a move for the Southampton star.

Vestergaard signed a four-year deal with the Saints when he joined from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2018 and therefore his contract is set to expire next summer.

The Denmark international played a key role in their run to the European Championship semi-final.

And Agbonlahor has backed Tottenham to try and get a deal over the line this summer.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I really like him.

“I watched him a lot last season and for Denmark in the Euros and he was very good.

“He’s very strong, a big, big guy, very tall. He reminds me of Martin Laursen the way he attacks the ball.

“He’s a great, great player and I’m sure if Spurs can get that over the line they will.

“Southampton won’t want to lose him but with one year left on his contract it could make sense for him to get sold.”

Vestergaard played 30 games for Southampton last term.

The 28-year-old has scored four goals in 72 Premier League games for the Saints.

He has 29 international caps to his name and featured in all of their games at this summer’s Euros.

In other news, Tottenham have been tipped to announce two signings next week after terms agreed.
