Gabby Agbonlahor has told Celtic to sign a quick centre-back like Rangers’ Connor Goldson.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England forward delivered his verdict after Shane Duffy’s nightmare loan spell from Brighton was ended prematurely.
The Republic of Ireland international had not featured for the Hoops since Neil Lennon resigned his position as manager in February.
Young Stephen Welsh and Kristoffer Ajer have been John Kennedy’s first-choice centre-back pairing but Agbonlahor was not impressed with their recent showing against Rangers at Ibrox.
He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “Shane Duffy is a great defender so maybe it’s a credit to the Scottish league to show that it’s not easy.
“Some players may think ‘Oh, you go to the Scottish league, it’s easy. It’s only hard against Rangers.’
“He’s found out it’s not. Some of the conditions in some of the games are tough.
“It didn’t work out for him but he’s still a good defender.
“Maybe Celtic will be looking at somebody who’s a bit quicker.
“I looked at them against Rangers in the last game and the centre-halves were quite slow.
“When [Jermain] Defoe scored, at Defoe’s age, he shouldn’t be able to chop Welsh and score that goal, to be honest, that’s embarrassing.
“That shouldn’t be happening. The miles on the clock that Defoe’s got, he shouldn’t be scoring that goal.
“You just couldn’t see that happening to Goldson.”
