Alan Hutton: I don't expect 24-yr-old to play for Rangers ever again

Brandon Barker has been given “more than enough chances” at Rangers and is likely to be moved on permanently in the summer.

That is the view of former Gers and Scotland defender Alan Hutton who, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted he hopes the winger can put himself in the shop window during the second half of the season.

Rangers confirmed on Monday the 24-year-old had sealed a deadline day loan move to join Oxford United in League One.

The wide man featured regularly during the opening weeks of the campaign but fell down the pecking order at Ibrox from October.

He ended up making just two league appearances totalling three minutes in the Gers’ last 12 games before his temporary exit.

Hutton believes Barker may have played his last game for the Glasgow giants and insisted he had a chance to garner interest from elsewhere while at Oxford.

“I think Gerrard and his team are building a great squad and they’re developing with each game that passes,” Hutton told Football Insider.

“Of course you want to get better, if you have a certain standard, the players that you bring in have to either match that or offer more – that’s where Rangers are at at the moment.

“They’re flying high, and yes, Barker, he’s went down to League One, that’s probably a move that suits him, he’s one in the shop window.

“Gerrard’s given him more than enough opportunities, in my opinion, to stamp his authority in games and he’s not taken it for me.

“It’s about moving him on for good and it definitely shows you where Rangers are at the moment.”

Barker has played a total of 26 times for Rangers across all competitions, with three goals under his belt.

He joined the likes of Jordan Jones, George Edmundson and Glenn Middleton in heading out on loan from Ibrox last month.
