Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is 'formidable' and will score for fun at Aston Villa - pundit
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could strike a partnership with Philippe Coutinho and score for fun if he joins Aston Villa.
That’s according to former Villa hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the midfielder’s future.
Oxlade-Chamberlain is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract at Anfield
An Aston Villa source told Football Insider on 11 June that Aston Villa are interested in signing the 25-year-old this summer.
The source has also told this site they believe their ambitions, financial power and the lure of Anfield legend Steven Gerrard could help propel them into pole position to secure a deal.
McAvennie claims Oxlade-Chamberlain and Coutinho would thrive alongside each other.
“I think that is a good bit of business,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“I like him as a player. You can tell he wants to get out and play, some players are happy to sit on the bench and not play.
“He would love to stay at Liverpool and he would love to be in the first team, but he’s not.
“The reality is, he can go and play for Aston Villa every week.
“I can understand him wanting to go and play and he would be a really good signing for Villa.
“Him and Coutinho, that’s not bad, formidable. The two of them have goals in them.
“It would be great for the fans as well because those players play the game the way it should be played.”
Oxlade-Chamberlain has dropped down the pecking order at Anfield in recent times and registered a total of 1526 minutes from his 29 appearances in all competitions in 2021-22.
He joined the club from Arsenal in the summer of 2017 and has made 133 appearances.
In other news, Aston Villa have been told to sign an Ollie Watkins ally as talks reach advanced stage.
