Newcastle United are well positioned to offer Alexander Isak a new contract during the summer, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the Magpies will “try and persuade” the Sweden international to extend his stay at St James’ Park at the end of this season in what is being seen as a "brilliant" piece of business.

Isak’s current contract runs until 2028, but the club are hoping to tie him down to a new deal as several top Premier League clubs are monitoring him.

The Magpies are trying to fight off the competition for Alexander Isak

However, Newcastle’s decision to offload several players during January has left their finances in a stronger state to allow them to keep Isak.

The previous transfer window is being seen as a short-term pain for a long-term gain, and keeping Isak for the foreseeable future would tick that box.

Isak has been a key part of Eddie Howe’s side this season, scoring 19 goals and providing five assists in 27 games across all competitions.

The striker is expected to continue playing a significant role in Newcastle’s attempts to secure European football for next season.

The Magpies were desperate to avoid a repeat of what happened last summer when they were forced into selling Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh early in the transfer window due to profit and sustainability and financial fair play rules.
