Allan McGregor could be handed new role by Rangers after confirmed news - Hutton
Alan Hutton has claimed Jon McLaughlin could replace Allan McGregor as the first-choice goalkeeper at Rangers despite the veteran’s contract extension.
The ex-Gers right-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, believes it’s down to the players to prove to Giovanni van Bronckhorst who is worth the number one spot.
Rangers announced on Monday (20 June) that McGregor, 40, had signed a one-year contract extension.
His understudy Jon McLaughlin, 34, penned a new deal at Ibrox in January which will see him remain at the club until 2024.
McLaughlin was the second choice keeper at Ibrox last season and has been since signing for the club.
However, Hutton suggested the ex-Sunderland keeper can compete with McGregor for the top spot this year.

“There’s going to be competition there,” he told Football Insider‘s Charlotte Cohen.
“Jon McLaughlin signed a new deal, McGregor signed a new deal which is obviously good for the club.
“They’ve pushed each other all the way all of last season as well, even though McGregor was number one.
“So I think the manager will put it down to them that they’ll have to go and prove their worth, show what they’re all about.
“I think whoever grabs that opportunity within preseason will be number one next season.”
McGregor has amassed nearly 500 appearances for the Gers since coming through the ranks.
The ex-Scotland international kept 12 clean sheets in 26 appearances in the Scottish Premiership last season.
