Alan Hutton is "more than sure" Rangers have held contract talks with Allan McGregor despite claims to the contrary.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers defender, Rangers TV pundit and close friend of the 40-year-old insisted there have "definitely" been discussions over extending the shot-stoppers stay.

Sky Sports (8 March) report contract negotiations are yet to take place between player and club, with his current terms expiring this summer.

The report also claims Jon McLaughlin could become Giovanni van Bronckhorst's number one next season.

However, Hutton insisted the Gers boss will not have made a decision on who his first-choice keeper will be.

He also insisted talks have taken place over a new deal.

"There will be discussions, definitely," Hutton told Football Insider's Russell Edge.

"You're never just going to let someone with that experience just kind of hang on and not know what's going on between player and club.

"So yeah, there have been discussions. I think the ball is now in Allan's court, to decide whether he wants to continue playing, does he see his future as a coach and how he sees this going forward. I'm more than sure there have been discussions between them.

Asked about Van Bronckhorst possibly making McLaughlin his number one now, Hutton said: "I'm not having that for one minute.

"If Allan McGregor signs a new deal, obviously Jon McLaughlin has signed his, it's a case of everybody in the squad coming in for pre-season and proving yourself in training and games.

"Whoever comes out on top, then they will be the number one because they deserve to be. I don't believe Giovanni van Bronckhorst will name it this early on. It'll be up to the players to prove themselves."
