Kevin Campbell has been blown away by the transformation of Kalvin Phillips at Leeds United but is not surprised he is taking the Premier League by storm.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Arsenal and Everton striker revealed how he watched Phillips closely when United were in the Championship.
The 24-year-old has won his first England caps this season and is establishing himself as a force both at Premier League and international level.
Campbell is in no doubt that other clubs will be looking on enviously at the United midfield kingpin.
“I have watched Kalvin for a number of years in the Championship and I knew that he would take to the Premier League easily because he is an amazing player,” Campbell told Football Insider.
“He is a good reader of the game, good user of the baller, great tackler and he reads the game very well.
“His rise has not been meteoric but it seems that way now that he has got his England cap.
“I have been following him for a good few years and I would not be surprised if teams are coveting him because there is not many defensive midfielders of his quality.”
Phillips started Leeds’ first five Premier League matches of the season but has missed the last two with a shoulder injury.
United initially feared he would be absent for six weeks but the midfielder has begun light training this week and could return straight after the international break.
