Ao Tanaka provides more evidence that Leeds must convince him to stay as stats emerge vs Wolves
Ao Tanaka is heavily linked with a move away from Leeds United this summer amid an inconsistent role under Daniel Farke.
The midfielder started as the Whites beat Wolves 3-0 at Elland Road on Saturday, courtesy of goals from James Justin, Noah Okafor and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
But it was just Tanaka’s third Premier League appearance in the last 10 games, with Farke forced to cover for the injured Anton Stach.
The Japan international has often been impressive this season, but his struggle for regular starts has led to links away.
Leeds transfer chiefs will be assessing the situation ahead of the summer, however, and Saturday’s performance should give them something to think about.

Football Insider exclusively revealed on Saturday that Leeds fear that Tanaka will push to leave this summer, with Bundesliga clubs among those interested.
The 27-year-old arrived from Fortuna Dusseldorf in 2024 and has been a superb signing, proving his ability to play in the Premier League this season.

| Minutes played | 89 |
| Accurate passes | 40/44 |
| Chances created | 4 |

But it is clear that Farke does not have complete trust in the midfielder, although it is unclear exactly why.
Tanaka was superb as Leeds beat Wolves on Saturday, creating an impressive four chances for his teammates from the base of the midfield.
The Japan international also found his mark with four successful crosses, completed all of his long balls and won two free-kicks.
Defensively, Tanaka was resolute as well. The midfielder made five recoveries, an interception and a clearance.
It is likely not too late to convince the 27-year-old to stay put at Elland Road this summer, but Farke will have to demonstrate his trust.
Daniel Farke praises Tanaka
Tanaka will go to the World Cup with Japan this summer, and there, he could drum up a line of suitors ahead of a potential transfer.
But there are hopes at Leeds that he could still be persuaded to stay at Elland Road, despite an unclear relationship with Farke.
“Ups and downs for every player, very self-critical and some doubts after performances but we always back him,” said the German on Tanaka after Leeds won at Manchester United on Monday.
“We were always convinced he could deliver. His first season in the top flight so he needs time to adapt and find consistency. At the moment, he delivers exactly what we need. Has a great chance to shine.”
The seven consecutive games Tanaka sat on the bench for appear to directly contradict his words.
Should Farke want the Japan international to stay at the club this summer, he must show that there is a future for him at Elland Road.
