Leeds United transfer activity depends on Championship survival
Leeds United have competed well in their first season back in the Premier League and they will be desperate to be players in the summer transfer window. But, their business in the market is intrinsically linked to retaining their top-flight status. In essence, the Whites are playing a game of wait-and-see before diving head first into their transfer plans.
- Scenario A: Leeds secure their safety in the top flight, and can start looking at high-calibre players to boost their squad in the summer.
- Scenario B: The Whites suffer relegation and have to consider player sales before building a squad capable of making an immediate escape from the Championship.
Scenario B will not enter the thinking if Leeds can find a couple more decent results in the final stages of the campaign, but some missed chances leading into the final international break of the season means it is not set in stone which league they will be playing in next term.
Who has been linked with Leeds United?
Pavel Sulc is name that has appeared in the rumour mill for Leeds ahead of the summer. With Facundo Buonanotte not exactly setting the world alight since joining from Brighton on loan in the January window, Farke is still searching for a creative outlet who could provide a creative outlet for Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Some reports suggest he would cost a club-record £39million, so Premier League survival is essential if this one is to grow legs. Sporting CP midfielder Hidemasa Morita is another name linked to Leeds, he would offer energy in the centre of the park. He is particularly adept at ball retention, and could be an upgrade on his Japanese compatriot Ao Tanaka. Bodo/Glimt striker Kasper Hogh has also been rumoured with a move to Leeds, though reports Celtic are currently leading the race for his signature. Another forward to supplement Calvert-Lewin would certainly be welcome at Elland Road.
Footballer Insider expert Mick Brown also said Leeds United are “all over it” amid interest in Troy Parrott. The former Tottenham Hotspur striker is attracting plenty of interest after impressing for AZ Alkmaar in the Eredivisie, and a switch to Elland Road could potentially on the cards this summer.
Who could leave Leeds United this summer?
The most obvious changes this summer are likely to come in the goalkeeper department. The much-maligned Illan Meslier would once upon a time commanded quite a decent fee, but a string of poor performances saw his value plummet and it looks unlikely he will stay at Elland Road. Karl Darlow is also nearing the end of his contract, though the experienced Wales international has been first choice for much of the second half of the campaign due to inconsistent displays from Lucas Perri, who joined from Lyon in the summer. With Perri likely to be sold if a deal can be found, Leeds will likely try and retain Darlow but search for a more permanent number one. Buonanotte is coming towards the end of his loan and there has been little indication that will be extended.
Joe Gelhardt seemingly has no Leeds future despite impressing at Hull City on loan. There have been suggestions Rangers could look to sign Gelhardt, with both clubs of course owned by 49ers Enterprises. Joel Piroe is also said to still be on the radar of the Glasgow giants.
