Hugo Ekitike adds to Liverpool’s injury woes

Liverpool suffered a 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain to exit the Champions League quarter-finals 4-0 on aggregate on Tuesday. It means the Reds’ last outside shot at silverware this season is now over, and the focus now is on ensuring a top-five finish and a return to Europe’s top table next season. But moreover, the defeat came at a heavy, heavy cost with star forward Hugo Ekitike suffering what looked like a serious Achilles injury, and he had to be taken from the field on a stretcher.

Speaking after the defeat at Anfield, boss Arne Slot said: “Not so good. I think we could all see it didn’t look good. Let’s wait and see what it will be, but we could all see it didn’t look good.” Team-mate Ibrahima Konate added: “Ekitike, I am very sad for him. I hope he will come back. To be fair, I think it’s bad. I heard many things, but I don’t want to talk about it.”

If the worst is confirmed, it would not just be his season that is over but so too would his World Cup participation with France, which would be a huge disappointment for a player who has been one the rare bright spots in a season of struggle for Liverpool. Away from Ekitike, Alexander Isak continued to build up his match sharpness with 45 minutes against PSG and will hope for more minutes in Sunday’s Merseyside derby with Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium. Goalkeeper Alisson Becker remains a notable miss, though, and he is not expected back until late in the campaign. Conor Bradley, Wataru Endo and Giovanni Leoni remain long-term absentees, who won’t be seen again until next season.

Right Centre-Back Ibrahima Konate Joe Gomez, Amara Nallo
Left Centre-Back Virgil van Dijk Giovanni Leoni, Rhys Williams
Left-Back Milos Kerkez Andy Robertson
Defensive Mid Ryan Gravenberch Wataru Endo, S. Bajcetic
Central Mid (8) Alexis Mac Allister Curtis Jones, Trey Nyoni

Centre-Forward Hugo Ekitike Alexander Isak, Jayden Danns
