Howe Future Under Review, PIF Shortlist & Summer Rebuild Analysis

At the start of the 2025-26 season, it would have been fanciful to believe that Newcastle United would look to replace Eddie Howe in the St James’ Park dugout. The Magpies had just won the Carabao Cup, and would go on to secure Champions League football. Indeed, it was a campaign to forever entrench Howe in Geordie folklore. But things can change rapidly in football, and things have started to unravel slightly for Newcastle, who are out of all competitions now after Barcelona earned a comprehensive last-16 aggregate victory in the Champions League. Defeat to Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby only added to the pressure, and no continental football at all next season is a very realistic proposition. It has led to reports that Newcastle’s PIF ownership are going to hold a review on Howe’s position at the end of the season. It remains unclear which way the tide is turning, but Howe could certainly do with a strong end to the Premier League campaign.

Who could replace Eddie Howe at Newcastle United?

There is no immediate indication that Newcastle are looking to replace Howe, but the reports of an end-of-season review mean there is the possibility that a change will be made in the close-season.

However, betting markets are now open to show who could replace Howe at St James’ Park and after Bournemouth announced that he’s leaving at the end of the season, Andoni Iraola is a 2/1 favourite to replace Howe. However, Benfica manager Jose Mourinho is also in at 2/1 to cap a sensational return to the Premier League. Oliver Glasner (6/1) and Roberto Mancini (8/1) are also contenders.
