Michael Carrick has overseen a quickfire transformation of Manchester United’s fortunes since being announced as the club’s interim manager for the remainder of the season. Ruben Amorim was sacked in early January after just 14 months in charge at Old Trafford, leading to the Glazers and INEOS appointing Carrick as head coach until the summer. Since taking the reins, the former Middlesbrough manager has overseen seven wins in 10 matches, propelled United up to third in the Premier League table and is close to sealing a return to the Champions League next season.
Michael Carrick odds-on favourite, ahead of Julian Nagelsmann
Due to his impressive work in the Old Trafford dugout, the 44-year-old is now the clear bookmakers’ favourite to get the job permanently this summer. The ex-Manchester United and England midfielder no doubt deserves it based on the evidence he’s supplied so far and, as it stands, the list of names who could potentially replace him is rather underwhelming. Julian Nagelsmann is the second favourite, but he lasted less than two years at Bayern Munich and hasn’t exactly impressed with the German national team. Roberto De Zerbi is also in the running, but he’s been linked with Tottenham and was axed by Marseille in February after disappointing in Ligue 1 and the Champions League.
Mauricio Pochettino has also come into the bookmakers’ thinking to be the next Manchester United manager, while Andoni Iraola’s is a name consistently linked.
