Tottenham’s Championship transfer plan becomes more likely

Tottenham are edging closer to the possibility of being plunged in to a £261million financial black hole after dropping into the Premier League relegation zone. Roberto De Zerbi‘s first game in charge of Spurs didn’t go to plan as they lost 1-0 away to Sunderland, while West Ham thrashed Wolves to leapfrog their London rivals in the standings. At the start of the season, no one at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium would have had Championship football in mind when thinking of recruitment and player trading. However, they’d be negligent now to not have that plan firmly in effect.

Dual-Contingency Recruitment Planning

RECRUITMENT REPORTS

Scenario A: Premier League Survival

Maintaining top-flight status focuses the board on elite reinforcement to address squad inconsistencies.

Player / Current Club Position Projected Cost Key Intel
ROBIN RISSER
RC Strasbourg
Goalkeeper TBC Targeted due to inconsistent performance from Vicario. Viewed as high-potential competition.
KEVIN SCHADE
Brentford
Forward £45m Long-term pursuit. Reports suggest a £45m bid is ready if Spurs retain Premier League status.

Scenario B: Championship Relegation

An immediate fire sale of top assets will make way for youth integration and EFL-ready talent.

Primary Action Key Figures Key Intel
Major Fire Sale
Richarlison / Romero High-earners and the club captain expected to be offloaded immediately to balance finances.
Youth Integration
Luka Vuskovic Return from Hamburg loan would see him integrated immediately as the cornerstone of the defense.
Contingency analysis based on current squad valuation and league position as of April 2026.

However, Football Insider expert Keith Wyness is sure ENIC will splash the cash to back De Zerbi this summer, especially having not invested a great deal in the winter transfer window.

Dominic Solanke could leave Tottenham regardless

It’s fair to say that Dominic Solanke hasn’t come anywhere near to hitting the heights that was expected of him when he joined Spurs from Bournemouth two years ago for £65m. As exclusively reported by Football Insider, Spurs could now be forced into selling Solanke this summer amid interest from Newcastle. Of course, if the North London giants are relegated, a deal will have to take place in order to cut costs. But even if De Zerbi does lead this side to safety, Solanke is someone who may be on the chopping block, with the latest Football Insider intel saying that Spurs could settle for £50m.

Target Scouting Report

Tottenham Hotspur | Summer 2026 Recruitment

RELEGATION SENSITIVE
Player / Current Club Position Heat Rating Latest Intel
JONATHAN DAVID
Juventus
Striker
David remains a primary attacking priority if PL safety is secured. Juventus are reportedly open to negotiations, but the player is unlikely to consider a move without guaranteed top-flight football.
NATHAN DE CAT
Anderlecht
Midfielder
Heavily monitored by Spurs scouts as a long-term project. However, intense competition from other European giants means Spurs would effectively drop out of the race in the event of relegation.
MAXI ARAUJO
Sporting CP
LW / LWB
Contact has been made, but his reported €80m release clause is currently impossible to trigger given the financial uncertainty. Any formal bid is on hold until the club’s league status is confirmed.
Information based on aggregate media reports and scouting whispers as of March 25, 2026.

In terms of incomings, Anderlecht’s teenage gem Nathan De Cat has been mooted with a move to Tottenham, and at £30.4m might prove a good prospect for the future, though if Spurs are in the second tier, it looks a complete non-starter. It has also been reported that contact has been made with Sporting CP for versatile left-side ace Maxi Araujo, though the Uruguayan is said to be attracting interest from plenty of suitors.
