Hibernian ready themselves for Miguel Chaiwa bids as Celtic eye move

Celtic have a lot of issues to contend with right now, not least who will be manager come the first day of the 2026-27 season with Martin O’Neill’s temporary stint set to end at the end of the campaign. But the rumour mill is still swirling, and Football Insider sources say Celtic are among the clubs interested in Hibernian ace Miguel Chaiwa. The defensive midfielder was reportedly on Celtic’s radar in the winter, but the club were unwilling to sanction a permanent deal. The Hoops’ scouting team has been keeping tabs on the 21-year-old, though, and have been sufficiently impressed by his performances in the Scottish Premiership.

Who could leave Celtic this summer?

As we enter the closing weeks of the season, Celtic are in uncharted territory in third place in the Scottish Premiership. Not only are they without a permanent manager, but they also face the prospect of failing to win the league title and failing to qualify for the 2026-27 Champions League. The Parkhead hotseat is far from the only uncertainty going into the summer, too, with Kasper Schmeichel, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Kelechi Iheanacho and James Forrest all approaching the end of their contracts. Celtic also have a score of loanees who’ll leave, too. However, the Bhoys have option-to-buy clauses to keep Junior Amadu, Tomas Cvancara and Joel Mvuka in Glasgow’s East End, should they wish.

Celtic ponder Jon McCracken move amid Kasper Schmeichel uncertainty

Celtic goalkeeper Schmeichel has been out of action since February, with a shoulder injury that requires surgery. Unfortunately, Leicester’s legendary Premier League winner admitted earlier this month that his career could be over. Schmeichel faces up to 12 months of rehabilitation, and in that time, his contract at Celtic Park will expire, before he celebrates his 40th birthday in November. It would no doubt mark a disappointing end to what has been a fantastic career for the 120-cap Denmark goalkeeper.

With so much uncertainty over the long-term future of Schmeichel, Celtic are reportedly planning to add at least one goalkeeper to their ranks this summer to provide cover for Viljami Sinisalo. Football Insider transfer expert Pete O’Rourke has revealed that Celtic are eyeing the free transfer of Dundee United goalkeeper Jon McCracken. With the 25-year-old out of contract this summer, he would provide a bargain option between the sticks to boost the Bhoys’ options in goal. However, O’Rourke notes that Celtic are facing competition from Sheffield Wednesday, Blackburn Rovers and Queens Park Rangers with clubs in England on red alert due to the imminent expiry of his deal.
