Everton spending spree on the cards as push for Europe continues

After what’s felt like an eternity of stripping down the squad and negotiating PSR hurdles amid a backdrop of takeover anxiety, Everton are finally showing signs of positioning themselves among the Premier League’s elite. The 3-0 win over Chelsea before the international break left Everton firmly in the race to qualify for European football next season and, who knows, maybe even a spot in the 2026-27 Champions League.

As such, Everton’s plans for the summer transfer window will involve a variety of eventualities, but a worst-case scenario of a mid-table finish is pretty much acceptable for most Evertonians after the heartache of supporting the Merseyside club through the final years of Farhad Moshiri’s ownership.

Dan Friedkin’s TFG have the money and the PSR legroom to be able to spend big this summer, and no deal would be bigger than acquiring Jack Grealish on a permanent basis from Manchester City. However, that’s not the only deal that David Moyes and Friedkin could be cooking up. Sources have told Football Insider that Everton have held talks to sign Aston Villa captain John McGinn, who they sought to sign in the last summer transfer window. Villa reportedly want £20million to sell McGinn, and at the age of 31 that might be a little steep for Everton.

James Garner attracts Aston Villa attention

The major caveat of having such a good season is that other clubs will come and try to sign your best players. Everton are likely to experience that first hand in the summer with Iliman Ndiaye, who’s a target for Arsenal and Manchester United. Football Insider has exclusively revealed that Everton won’t entertain any bids for the Senegal international. However, it remains to be seen whether or not Ndiaye’s head could be turned by a big-money offer from a big club that can promise him silverware and regular Champions League nights.

Moreover, James Garner has had a breakout season that has seen him make his England debut. Aston Villa are reportedly interested in Garner, with former Villans scout Mick Brown telling Football Insider that Unai Emery is keen to strengthen his squad and Garner would be viewed as a strong signing.

Everton also have a handful of senior stars who’ll be out of contract come the summer. Club legend Seamus Coleman is among them but the likes of Vitalii Mykolenko, Idrissa Gueye and Michael Keane will need replacing.
