New Tottenham Head Coach, Long-Term Deal & Tactical Vision

Roberto De Zerbi takes on Tottenham job

Tottenham have become somewhat of a laughing stock during the 2025-26 season. Ange Postecoglou was unceremoniously given the boot in the summer despite ending Spurs’ 17-year wait for a trophy in the Europa League last season. Thomas Frank was chosen as the man to lead Tottenham in the Champions League, but a hugely underwhelming tenure, lasting just eight months, was ended in February. Igor Tudor was placed in temporary charge for the rest of the season, but Spurs‘ solitary win under the Croatian’s tenure was a consolation 3-2 win over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League 16, with a 5-2 defeat in the first leg doing the damage. The 3-0 loss at Nottingham Forest before the March international break ultimately proved the final straw as Spurs announced that Tudor had departed the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium by mutual consent. Now, ENIC and Joe Lewis have hired former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi as their newest permanent boss, and he faces the mother of all rescue jobs to keep Spurs in the top flight.

What Tottenham fans can expect from De Zerbi

De Zerbi rose to prominence at Brighton between 2022 and 2024 before leaving the AMEX amid a backdrop of boardroom fallouts. He took the job at Marseille shortly after, lasting around a year and a half in the south of France before being sacked in February of this year. One big talking point among Spurs fans is how much De Zerbi struggles to avoid controversy. He’s regularly threatened to walk away from jobs – in public – and that kind of attitude doesn’t quite match up to the situation Spurs find themselves in right now. Would someone like Sean Dyche do a better job, given his grit, unmistakable attitude and track record of digging teams out of trouble? In De Zerbi, Spurs have landed themselves a talented manager, but in terms of character, there’s something about this one that doesn’t quite feel right.
