Arsenal backed to complete 'tremendous signing' to replace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang - pundit

Alex McLeish has backed Arsenal to pull off the “tremendous signing” of Raheem Sterling from Manchester City this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland boss suggested the 27-year-old could fill the void left in attack by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s January exit.

As reported by the Telegraph (9 May), Arsenal are plotting a raid for Sterling should he be made available by City this summer.

Mikel Arteta is reportedly looking for attacking talent to replace Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.

The report claims he would make Sterling, who he worked with as a coach at City, the focal point of his attack.

McLeish insisted the England international would be a “great signing” for Arsenal.

Asked if he thought Sterling could fill the void left by Aubameyang, McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Yeah, I do. I think he’d be a wonderful signing.

“Watching his performance last week (v Newcastle), back in the City side, he was exceptional. It was almost like he’s got a point to prove by Pep leaving him out and the speculation that he might be leaving the club.

“He looked hungrier than ever. That would be a tremendous signing for any club. Arsenal should be able to tempt him. He’s a Londoner anyway and I think he didn’t live very far away from Wembley and north London.

“He would be a great signing for Arsenal. They’ll try and command a big fee for him if they decide to let him go.”

Sterling’s contract at City expires next summer.

He has scored 17 goals in 46 appearances this season.
