Arsenal duo Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez want to earn up to £290,000-a-week because they believe they should be earning comparative figures to Manchester United’s highest paid stars, according to a report.
The Evening Standard claim the pair believe they should be earning similar stratospheric wages to Paul Pogba, Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The reported bombshell means that Arsenal face a battle to keep hold of the two playmakers, with a whole host of clubs interested in signing them and the duo are holding out for a dramatic increase in their wages if they are to stay in London.
Ozil is currently being paid £140,000-a-week, which is £10,000-a-week more than teammate Sanchez, and they are already two of the highest paid players at the club.
However, Pogba, Ibrahimovic and Rooney all earn over £250,000-a-week, with the Frenchman said to be raking in £290,000-a-week, and the Arsenal pair reportedly believe they should be earning similar wages, to “reflect their status in world football”.
Arsene Wenger has openly voiced his opinion that no footballer in the club should be earning more than the manager, as it would undermine his role.
He is currently on no more than £160,000-a-week but it is believed Arsenal have admitted they are prepared to increase the players’ wages to close to £200,000-a-week but the duo are still unhappy.
Sanchez scored a hat-trick in Arsenal’s 5-1 victory against West Ham on Saturday and has already netted 13 goals in 19 appearances for the club this season.
Ozil is considered to be one of the best number 10s in the league and he scored his eighth goal in all competitions against the Hammers.
