Arsenal sent scouts to watch Helder Costa play for Wolves against Rotherham on Saturday, according to a report.
The Sun reports that the Championship winger is currently rated at £20million by Wolves after only recently securing a permanent switch to Molineux which was worth £13million.
Arsene Wenger could face stiff competition from Chelsea, who are also scouting the 23-year-old after he impressed when he played against Antonio Conte’s side in the FA Cup.
The Arsenal recruitment experts would have seen Costa missed a penalty in Wolves’ 1-0 win over the bottom club Rotherham.
Costa has made 36 appearances for the Black Country club in all competitions this season and has scored 10 goals, making him the club’s top goalscorer.
The winger, who has played for every youth level for Portugal from Under-16 to Under-21, has also provided nine goals for his Molineux teammates.
He originally arrived in the West Midlands on a loan deal from Benfica.
However in the first half of the season he impressed so much at Wolves that they saw it fit to make Costa’s stay at the club a permanent one, which broke the club’s transfer record signing for the second time this season.
Football Insider Verdict
It remains unsure what Conte and Wenger see in Costa because he hasn’t exactly broke the mould at Molineux. Yes, he is Wolves’ best player but he only ever managed one appearance for the Benfica first team before moving to England. Costa is a decent player but he is nowhere near Premier League quality as he has not done enough to help Wolves move away from the Championship relegation zone this season. Even worse, his form has severely dipped since making his move to the club permanent in January. There has to be more options out there for Arsenal who are both cheaper and better.
