Arsenal fan-favourite believes new £30m man will hold Wenger's midfield together

England international Jack Wilshere believes new signing Granit Xhaka is a leader who can hold the Arsenal midfield together.

The former Gladbach midfielder joined in June for a fee believed to be in the region of £30million, after starring in Switzerland’s Euro 2016 campaign.

Wilshere told The Gunners’ official website that he knows Xhaka well, and has been impressed with certain attributes of the 23-year-old’s game.

“I’ve played against him a few times at youth level for England,” Wilshere said. “I’ve also played against him for the first team with England, so I know him quite well.”

“I’ve always thought he was a good player, he’s very strong and has got a good left foot.”

The former Basel midfielder could be set to partner Wilshere in midfield as the North London side are set to face an MLS All-Star team on Thursday during their tour of the United States.

Xhaka was integral to the Gladbach side that qualified for their debut Champions League appearance last season, making an impressive 140 appearances in four years with the Bundesliga outfit.

Wilshere, who once had a spell on-loan at Bolton, believes that Xhaka can add something different to the Arsenal engine room.

“He’s a leader, he can hold the midfield together and can get things going from back to front. He’s a good signing.”
