'Incompetent', 'Terrible' - Arsenal fans rip into attacker after draw v Southampton
Arsenal fans destroyed Danny Welbeck as soon as he was subbed on for Per Mertesacker, and his performance did little to improve their mood.
The Gunners scrapped a 1-1 draw against Southampton, as they conceded a Charlie Austin goal early in the game before Oliver Giroud grabbed a late equaliser.
Arsenal were chasing the game for the majority of it with the Saints defending deep to protect their surprise lead, and Welbeck was introduced to grab a goal midway through the second-half.
At least that’s what fans originally thought – the 27-year-old striker ended up playing the game stuck out on the wing and fans were not happy with his crosses.
Luckily the introduction of Giroud worked out better for the Gunners, as he grabbed the equaliser with two minutes to go.
One fan asked what Welbeck’s excuse was for his inability to cross, saying that at least Hector Bellerin can say he is a defender.

Why can't he play Lacazette and Giroud together? Surely better option than Welbeck who is nowhere near clinical. What does he have against Lacazette playing 90?

The irony of Danny Welbeck having to whip in crosses.

Welbeck on 61'. Giroud on 69'.
WHATS THE POINT. JUST BRING THEM ON TOGETHER. WHAT WILL WELBECK DO IN 7 MINUTES THAT U THINK YOU MIGHT NOT NEED GIROUD. ITS THE LACK OF LOGIC THAT KILLS.

Whatever Wenger sees in this Welbeck baffles me, dude is as incompetent as they come….#WengerOut

At least when Bellerin makes such a cross you can say he is a defender. But how can you explain this from Welbeck?

Swap Alexis and Welbeck you idiot

Whoever managed to sell Welbeck to Wenger is a genius

With the risk of looking a fool, I’d never think to put on Welbeck instead of Per in a scenario like this. Wilshere in as an extra midfielder or Giroud in order to always have two strikers in the box. What is Welbeck going to do against a deep-sitting wall of defenders? #Arsenal

The draw leaves Arsenal fifth in the table, one point ahead of both Tottenham and Burnley.
The 1-1 draw also means that the Gunners are 14 points off Manchester City at the top of the table.
The Gunners are also level on points with Liverpool, but the Reds have a superior goal difference.
The Reds could go three points clear of Arsenal if they beat Everton in the Merseyside Derby on Sunday.
