Should never start for us again: Arsenal fans destroy one player for first-half display v Soton

Arsenal fans were less than impressed by Per Mertesacker for his first-half display in the Premier League on Sunday, and vented on social media.

Fans destroyed the defender for his part in the Saints’ opening goal, and his lack of pace.

The Gunners fell behind to the Saints in the fifth minute as Charlie Austin flicked the ball past Petr Cech, after Mertesacker had given the ball away.

One fan said Arsenal deserved to lose after Wenger started Mertesacker, with another stating the defender should never start a game for the club again.

The defender hasn’t been a regular this season, making only eight appearances across all competitions.

Only three of those eight appearances have been in the league, but the defender has managed to score a rare league goal this season – in Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to Watford in October.

Arsenal went into the game today sixth in the table, knowing a win would move them above bitter rivals Tottenham into fifth.

However, they’ve now got it all to do in the second half.

In other Arsenal news, boss Arsene Wenger has heaped praise on this midfielder for his performances this season.
