Arsenal have 'gone all out' for Smith Rowe after 'massive' transfer news - pundit

Arsenal fans will be hugely “relieved” Emile Smith Rowe has signed a new long-term contract, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted the 20-year-old’s new deal is “massive” for the Gunners.

Arsenal confirmed on Thursday (July 22nd) Smith Rowe had signed new terms at the Emirates Stadium.

The attacking midfielder will also wear the number 10 shirt following Mesut Ozil’s departure in January.

As revealed by Football Insider (July 6th), Smith Rowe was the subject of at least two bids from Aston Villa this summer.

Arsenal have also reportedly agreed a deal in principle to sign Ben White for £50million.

As such, Whelan admitted the future looks bright for the Gunners.

Asked how important Smith Rowe’s new deal is for Arsenal, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Massive. This is huge.

“With the signing of Ben White and Smith Rowe, you’re looking at two players who are the future of Arsenal. You throw in (Bukayo) Saka as well, another young player who’s come through the under-23s.

“This is what they’re all about now. These three players, 22-years-of-age and younger. They’re going to be the backbone of this side for a number of years now.

“I think it just shows the intent that they’ve managed to hold onto him. There was a massive push from Aston Villa to bring him to the club. They could see how valuable he was to Arsenal last season.

“I think it shows the intent to the fans that they can keep their best players. They can offer things to these young players. I think that’s what Smith Rowe wanted.

“He wants to be number one on that team sheet and I think he proved last year, with every bit of contribution, he’s more than capable of being that special midfield player that Arsenal have been desperately needing.

“Ask every single Arsenal fan. They will tell you how relieved they are. The club have gone all out to keep this young, special player.”
