Arsenal pursuit of Lamptey dead in the water after Ornstein update - Campbell

Kevin Campbell has tipped Arsenal to pull out of the race to sign Tariq Lamptey after the Brighton defender was ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gunners striker expressed concern over the 20-year-old’s injury record and said Mikel Arteta needs players who are fit on a regular basis.

The Athletic‘s David Ornstein revealed on Monday that Lamptey has been ruled out for the rest of the 2020/21 campaign following surgery on a hamstring injury.

Fabrizio Romano revealed last week that Arsenal were one of a number of clubs interested in the blisteringly-quick right-back amid doubts over Hector Bellerin’s future.

Lamptey was hugely impressive in the first half of the season, with one goal and three assists in 11 Premier League appearances.

When asked by Football Insider if the defender’s injury could change Arsenal’s stance on signing the player, Campbell said:

“There is clamour for the club to sign a recognised right-back this summer but I think the injury scuppers any chance of that move.

“Arsenal need players who are going to be there. We need players who are fit regularly.

“Lamptey has already had multiple injuries as a young player and that does not bode well.

“You do not want to buy players who cannot last a full season. That has been Arsenal’s achilles heel for years.”

In other news, Arsenal will ‘gazump’ Leicester City with a mega bid for Odsonne Edouard this summer, according to an ex-Gunners star.
